Does Section 409.1.2 of the 2014 Indiana Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) prohibit the location of a shutoff valve in a furnace room?
Interpretation of the State Building Commissioner
No, Section 409.1.2 of the 2014 IFGC does not prohibit the location of a shutoff valve in a furnace room, provided it is not in a concealed location within that room, and the area of the room in which the shutoff valve is located is not acting as a furnace plenum in whole or in part.
Section 409.1.2 of the 2014 IFGC does not provide a blanket prohibition on the installation of shutoff valves in furnace rooms, or in any other kind of room. It prohibits their installation in concealed locations and in furnace plenums. A shutoff valve installed in a furnace room is acceptable if its location within that room is not concealed or part of a furnace plenum.
For reference, the 2014 IFGC provides the following definitions:
CONCEALED LOCATION. A location that cannot be accessed without damaging permanent parts of the building structure or finish surface. Spaces above, below or behind readily removable panels or doors shall not be considered as concealed.
FURNACE PLENUM. An air compartment or chamber to which one or more ducts are connected and which forms part of an air distribution system.
